How to Take Proper Care of Curly Hair

Step 1

Shampoo your hair twice a week with a shampoo specifically formulated for curly hair. Follow up with a conditioner. If you wash your hair too often, you will strip it of its natural oils. Without the presence of these natural oils, curly hair falls prey to humidity and becomes frizzy.

Step 2

Use a leave-in conditioner daily to hydrate curly hair. Massage the conditioner from roots to tips and style hair as usual. Lots of moisturizing will prevent curly hair from becoming frizzy and puffy. Proper conditioning also gives curly hair a healthy shine.
#
Step 3

Comb hair with a wide-tooth comb, and avoid using brushes and fine combs. Wide-tooth combs detangle curly hair while also preventing breakage. Brushes cause curly hair to lose its natural bounce and become puffy. Fine-tooth combs often lead to breakage.
#
Step 4

Use a small amount of styling mousse or gel to tame flyaways and make curly hair easier to style. Apply the styling product when hair is still slightly damp. As hair dries, it will retain bounce and elasticity.
#
Step 5

Deep condition curly hair at least twice a month; once a week is better. Deep conditioning is important in taking proper care of curly hair. Curly hair is naturally drier than other types of hair. Extra conditioning is needed to keep it healthy, shiny and under control.
